What is it

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder that affects women during their reproductive years. It is characterized by the presence of multiple small cysts on the ovaries, irregular menstrual cycles, and elevated levels of androgens, which are male hormones that can lead to unwanted physical changes. PCOS can also have metabolic implications, including insulin resistance, which increases the risk for type 2 diabetes.

Common symptoms

PCOS presents in a variety of symptoms, which can differ from woman to woman. The most common symptoms include irregular or absent menstrual periods, excessive hair growth on the face and body (hirsutism), acne, thinning hair on the scalp, weight gain, particularly around the abdomen, and difficulty with fertility. Some women may also experience mood changes and sleep disturbances.

Root causes

The exact cause of PCOS is not fully understood, but it is believed to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Insulin resistance is frequently associated with PCOS and plays a significant role in its development. When the body's cells become resistant to insulin, the pancreas produces more insulin to compensate, which can lead to increased androgen production by the ovaries. This hormonal imbalance is a key factor in the symptoms of PCOS. Inflammation and lifestyle factors such as diet and physical activity levels may also contribute to the development and progression of PCOS.

How we treat it

At Cove Naturopathic, we take a holistic approach to managing PCOS by identifying and addressing its root causes. Treatment plans are individualized and may include dietary modifications to improve insulin sensitivity, such as reducing refined carbohydrates and increasing fiber intake. Regular physical activity is encouraged to help manage weight and improve insulin sensitivity. Nutritional supplements, such as inositol and omega-3 fatty acids, can support hormonal balance and metabolic health. Herbal medicine, including spearmint and licorice root, may help lower androgen levels and alleviate symptoms like hirsutism and acne. Stress management techniques, such as mindfulness and yoga, are also integral to our treatment approach, as stress can exacerbate hormonal imbalances.

When to seek care

If you experience symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, excessive hair growth, or difficulty with weight management, it may be beneficial to seek care. Early diagnosis and intervention can help manage symptoms more effectively and reduce the risk of long-term complications associated with PCOS, such as diabetes and heart disease. Our naturopathic approach at Cove Naturopathic focuses on empowering you with the tools and knowledge to achieve optimal health and well-being.
